Chapter Eleven
“You can’t create colours,” said David.
“Stupid,” said the gnome. “I don’t want colours. No-one deserves them. White is right as far as I’m concerned.”
“Yes,” called out Kellie who couldn’t keep quiet any longer. “We know the story - and why you were banished.”
The Painter snarled. “And just look at what happened to the fools who banished me. They had everything and now have only one colour to look on. And what did I do? Nothing but create bright new colours. Crinkly purple, foldaway red, compacted green, recycled pink, pickled yellow and even a wonderful new shade of black. Liquorice I called it. It had red and orange highlights when the sun hit it at the right angle.”
“I all sounds ghastly,” said Kellie.
“You have about as much colour sense as the elves,” said the Painter in disgust.
He stared into the pit and laughed. “Enjoy your stay,” he cackled and promptly disappeared.
What he didn’t know was the fact that David’s wings weren’t as frozen as the Painter thought. He wiggled them for a while and slowly they became pliable again. The Painter’s spell did not work too well on a wooden dragon.
David flew quickly to the top and then dropped his tail into the hole, which gave the children chance to climb up quickly and quietly to the surface. When they reached the top they discovered that the darkness had gone and that everything was a calm blue colour. The land was undulating and a small river ran down the hill into a beautiful blue sea.
David looked around to get his bearings and saw that a small, round cottage on the edge of the sea. ‘This way,” he said.
He set of at a brisk walk, and the children followed quickly behind. He led the way to the cottage and there was an awful noise coming from inside.
The trio sneaked up to the window and peeped inside and saw the Gnome searching frantically through the cupboards and drawers.
“He’s searching for true blue,” whispered David.
David stared out over the water where, on the horizon, he was sure it shone in a beautiful shade of blue.
“Go down to the beach and wait for me,” said David. “I’ve just had an idea.”
Kellie and Gregory didn’t argue, but slipped quietly away and then sat down on the blue sand beach to await David’s return.
David marched boldly up to the house. He poked his head around the doorway.
“Looking for true blue?” he shouted. The gnome stopped his searching and glared at David.
“You,” he said. “I thought I had out a stop to your game. Just wait until I find the blue and destroy it, then I’ll deal with you on a permanent basis.”
“Lovely spot this,” said David conversationally. “The sea looks inviting doesn’t it?”
The Painter glared at him, “No it doesn’t,” he said. “It’s horrible. I hate the water and I can’t swim.”
“That’s a pity,” said David. He took the cosmic clock from under his wing and shook it.
“You’d better hurry,” he said. “Time is running out. I just hope that green zone isn’t too far away.
